Fun Crock Pot Cooking for Kids: Easy Recipes for Children
Introduce your child to cooking with easy to make, tasty recipes for kids. Low heat crock pot recipes produce beautifully melded flavors and tender, succulent meals without the danger of burns and scalds from stove tops and ovens. Children can enjoy cooking safely. Many crock pot recipes lend themselves quite well to adaptations, making them great choices for picky eaters.
Breakfast
Cooking eggs in the crock pot is easy, and the result can be quite sophisticated. Have your children select flavors they like, and teach them how to determine which flavors mesh well with one another. Cheeses, spices, bacon bits, onions, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, and other vegetables are a good starting point.
Basic breakfast recipes can be adapted very easily by combining your child’s selected ingredients with the eggs, or making layers of seasoned bread, bacon bits, vegetables, and cheeses. The resulting concoction is a cross between a soufflé and a strata. |
Basic Slow Cooker Breakfast Bake
6 slices day old bread (crusts removed)
6 eggs
1 ½ cups milk
salt and pepper, to taste
1 ½ cups shredded cheese

Spray inside of slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Break bread into pieces and season with salt and pepper. Toss the seasoned bread with the shredded cheese, and add the combination to the bottom of the slow cooker in an even layer. Beat the eggs with the milk, until smooth. Pour over bread mixture.
Cook on Low for 3 ½ – 4 hours, or until desired consistency has been reached.

Lunch
Slow cooker soups are quick and simple to create. Because slow cookers preserve the moisture of ingredients and tenderize vegetables and meats so beautifully, they produce excellent stews and soups.
Peel and chop vegetables, and clean and prepare raw meats and poultry for your child. Present them in small bowls so your child can add them independently.
Make sure to teach your child to wash his or hands after handling raw meats and poultry.
Making soup is fun. Add alphabet noodles to broth based soups for an educational lunch, and encourage your child to experiment with different flavors. Add celery, chives, cheeses, and vegetables to creamy soups, and play with the unique tastes of various herbs. |
Creamy Chicken Vegetable Soup
3 Yukon Gold potatoes
4 carrots
1 onion
3 chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
1 cup chicken broth
Cooking Sherry, to taste
Paprika and Celery Salt, to taste
Non-stick cooking spray
Peel and chop potatoes, carrots, and onion. Spray the inside of the slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Combine potatoes, carrots, and onions in the bottom of the slow cooker. Place chicken breasts on top of the mixture, keeping them away from the sides of the slow cooker. Season liberally with paprika and celery salt. Pour chicken broth and cooking sherry over mixture.
Cook on low 3-4 hours, until tender. Remove chicken breasts, cut them into small pieces, and return them to the slow cooker.
Add:
1 (10 ¾ oz.) can 98% fat free condensed cream of celery soup
1 tsp pepper
½ tsp basil
1 tsp fresh rosemary, chopped
Paprika, if needed
Stir, and continue cooking 30 min. on Low.

Dinner
Slow cookers make it possible for children to create fancy, gourmet style meals as well. Imagine how proud your child would feel serving up an excellently prepared roast. Roasts are actually very easy to cook in a crock pot. From onion soup, to soda, to wine, a great variety of seasonings and sauces can be used. My favorite dinner recipes come from a series of books: the Fix-It and Forget-It collection. There are three in the series, Fix-It and Forget-It Lighlty, Fix-It and Forget-It Recipes for Entertaining, and the original Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook. I have all three, and there are a number of great recipes easy enough for kids to make on their own, or with parental help. |
